The hardware difference

The Smart Ultra Soundbar carries nine drivers: three tweeters and six racetrack full-range units, two of them firing upwards for Dolby Atmos height effects. It also includes ADAPTiQ, Bose’s room calibration, which measures the space and adjusts the sound to it.

The Smart Soundbar carries five speakers plus a centre tweeter, with two firing upwards.

Both decode Dolby Atmos, and both apply Bose’s TrueSpace processing to content that is not Atmos, which is most of what anyone actually watches.

Why calibration matters here

A soundbar creates height and surround effects by bouncing sound off your ceiling and walls. That makes it more sensitive to the room than a conventional speaker is. A bar that measures the room and corrects for it is working with the actual space rather than an idealised one, which is why ADAPTiQ is the more meaningful difference between these two than the driver count.

Run it if you buy the Ultra. Skipping the calibration wastes a large part of what you paid for.

The advice most buyers need

Before choosing between these, consider whether you can fit real surround speakers at all. A cheaper bar with genuine rear speakers behind the sofa will beat an expensive bar without them, every time. Processing is what you buy when the room or the household rules out running speakers to the back of the room.

Bose sells wireless subwoofers and surrounds that pair to either bar, so both systems can grow. The subwoofer usually makes more difference than the surrounds.

Which to buy

Take the Ultra if it will be the whole system and the room is awkward, because calibration will earn its keep. Take the Smart Soundbar if you intend to add a Bose subwoofer, which will do more for the sound than the extra drivers.
